Apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android that people can download from the website. They wrap Boards and support push notifications.

Consider first: web push. Boards already installs to a phone's home screen as a web app. Standard web push could give notifications without native apps:

  • Where it works: desktop browsers, Android, and iPhone home-screen apps on iOS 16.4 and later.
  • Cost: far less work and no app store review. This may be enough on its own.

If native apps are still wanted

  • Desktop: a wrapper such as Tauri or Electron for macOS and Windows, with signed installers.
  • Mobile: a wrapper such as Capacitor for iOS and Android.
  • Push: through Apple's (APNs) and Google's (FCM) push services.
  • iOS: needs an Apple Developer account. Distribution goes through TestFlight or the App Store, which takes the longest.

Either way

  • Settings: push follows each person's notification settings and blackout schedules from #7.
  • Opening a push: it goes straight to the item.
  • Devices: signing out or being deactivated stops pushes to that device.
