First commit on the local Gitea server, made after moving the tree off the Windows machine. Build outputs, node_modules and the AI models stay out (see .gitignore); everything the installer build needs is tracked. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Touch Gesture Features - Bible App
Overview
This document describes the new touch gesture features added to the Bible App, enabling enhanced user interaction on touch-enabled devices.
New Features
1. Two-Finger Scrolling
- Functionality: Allows users to scroll up and down through long Bible passages using two fingers
- Gesture: Place two fingers on the text and move them up or down
- Use Case: Particularly useful for navigating through long chapters or multiple verses
- Implementation: Detects vertical movement of two-finger touch points
2. Two-Finger Pinch & Zoom
- Functionality: Enables users to zoom in and out on the Bible text for better readability
- Gesture: Place two fingers on the text and move them apart (zoom in) or together (zoom out)
- Zoom Range: 50% to 300% (0.5x to 3.0x)
- Use Case: Helps users with vision difficulties or when reading on small screens
- Implementation: Calculates distance between touch points and applies CSS transform scaling
3. Zoom Reset Button
- Functionality: One-click button to reset zoom level back to 100%
- Location: Toolbar (search-minus icon)
- Use Case: Quick way to return to normal reading size
- Implementation: Resets zoom level to 1.0 for the active tab
4. Zoom Indicator
- Functionality: Visual indicator showing current zoom level as a percentage
- Display: Appears in top-right corner when zoom level changes
- Duration: Shows for 2 seconds then fades out
- Implementation: Updates in real-time during pinch gestures
5. Per-Tab Zoom Levels
- Functionality: Each tab maintains its own zoom level independently
- Use Case: Users can have different zoom levels for different passages
- Implementation: Zoom level stored per tab object
Technical Implementation
Touch Event Handling
// Two-finger gesture detection
handleTwoFingerStart(e, tab) {
// Calculate initial distance between touches
// Store initial zoom level and scroll position
}
handleTwoFingerMove(e, tab) {
// Determine if gesture is pinch or scroll based on movement
// Apply appropriate transformation
}
Zoom Scaling
setZoomLevel(zoom, tab) {
// Apply CSS transform scaling
// Adjust container dimensions
// Redraw annotations with new scale
}
Canvas Integration
- Annotations scale properly with zoom level
- Drawing coordinates are adjusted for zoom
- Canvas context is scaled to match text scaling
User Experience Features
Gesture Detection
- Smart Detection: Automatically distinguishes between pinch and scroll gestures
- Thresholds: Uses movement thresholds to determine gesture type
- Smooth Transitions: CSS transitions provide smooth zoom animations
Responsive Design
- Mobile Optimized: Touch gestures work best on mobile/tablet devices
- Desktop Support: Mouse wheel and trackpad gestures also supported
- Cross-Platform: Works on iOS, Android, and desktop browsers
Visual Feedback
- Zoom Indicator: Shows current zoom percentage
- Gesture Feedback: Visual feedback during touch interactions
- Smooth Animations: CSS transitions for professional feel
Browser Compatibility
Supported Browsers
- Chrome (desktop and mobile)
- Safari (iOS and macOS)
- Firefox (desktop and mobile)
- Edge (desktop and mobile)
Touch Event Support
touchstart,touchmove,touchendevents- Multi-touch gesture detection
- CSS transform support
- Canvas scaling support
Usage Instructions
For Users
- Pinch to Zoom: Place two fingers on the text and move them apart to zoom in, together to zoom out
- Two-Finger Scroll: Place two fingers on the text and move them up/down to scroll
- Reset Zoom: Click the search-minus icon in the toolbar to reset to 100%
- Single Finger: Still works for drawing annotations when using drawing tools
For Developers
- All existing functionality remains intact
- Touch gestures are additive to current features
- No breaking changes to existing code
- Modular implementation for easy maintenance
Performance Considerations
Optimization
- Uses
requestAnimationFramefor smooth animations - Efficient touch event handling with proper cleanup
- CSS transforms for hardware acceleration
- Minimal DOM manipulation during gestures
Memory Management
- Proper event listener cleanup
- Efficient canvas redrawing
- Optimized touch point calculations
Future Enhancements
Potential Improvements
- Double-tap to zoom: Quick zoom to specific level
- Zoom presets: Predefined zoom levels (75%, 125%, 150%)
- Gesture customization: User-configurable gesture sensitivity
- Accessibility: Screen reader support for zoom levels
Technical Enhancements
- Gesture velocity: Smoother scrolling based on gesture speed
- Inertial scrolling: Momentum-based scrolling
- Zoom boundaries: Visual indicators for min/max zoom
- Performance monitoring: Analytics for gesture usage
Testing
Test Scenarios
- Basic Gestures: Verify pinch and scroll work correctly
- Edge Cases: Test with very fast or slow gestures
- Multi-tab: Ensure zoom levels persist per tab
- Annotation Integration: Verify drawing works with zoom
- Responsive Design: Test on various screen sizes

Conclusion
The touch gesture features significantly enhance the Bible App's usability on touch-enabled devices while maintaining full compatibility with existing functionality. The implementation is robust, performant, and user-friendly, providing a modern touch experience for Bible reading and annotation.
